Welcome to A.P. U.S. Government and Politics!

Course Overview
A.P. U.S. Government and Politics is a social science course designed to improve students’ ability to read, write, and think critically. The course is divided into five broad units: American political ideologies and beliefs, political participation, foundations of American government, branches of government, and civil liberties & civil rights. Students are expected to take the advanced placement exam in May. A score of 3 or better on the exam may result in college credit.

Course Credit

Students who pass two semesters of AP U.S. Government and Politics will earn the third CPS-required social sciences credit. In addition, they will receive service learning credit upon completion of one major civics action project. Students who fail to complete or pass the civics action project may be required to retake the course, which could jeopardize their on-time graduation.

Grading Structure

Students are responsible for their success in the course.

  • Absences/Tardies: If students are absent-- even if those absences are excused-- they are still required to make up the work they missed. Students will lose participation points every day they are late to class.

  • Missed Work: All graded assignments are available twenty-four hours a day on Google Classroom. Missing assignments must be turned in no later than 2 days before the test assessing those skills in order to receive partial credit.

  • Grade Tracking: Students are responsible for tracking their own grades and may do so through their student portals. Parents may also monitor their students' progress through parent portal
